Running Accomplishments:

One of the highlights of my short running career thus far has been a rather surprising 10k finish. I had never cracked sub 40:00, but while in training for a marathon, surprised myself with a 38:49 (it remains my PR). 5k - 18:45 10k - 38:49 1/2 - 1:26:57 Mar - 3:15:54 (BQ by a few seconds!)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Set PR's at every distance and count down to becoming a Master runner. Realistically, I would like to run sub 18:00 this year and lower both the 1/2 and full marathon times. Not many chances here in Memphis to run a good/fast 10k. Oh yeah, try to juggle running/racing with a full-time job, home business, family, and a new baby.

Long-Term Running Goals:

In August of 2008, I begin training for my first sub 3:00 marathon.  The race will be the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis, TN. (my hometown).

* I began blogging, again, to help me maintain my motivation for my attempt!  Encouragement, advice, etc. is always welcome.

Personal:

I am married with one little girl (age 5) and a little boy (12 months). My daughter is beginning to run a little with me at her own leisure, I don't push her. My wife runs as well and I hope my son will someday run.

3 miles easy and then picked it up to ~7:05 pace for 3 miles.  Cool down 1.1 miles.  I chose a hilly course for this workout and, again, the heat was dreadful.  The effort felt much harder than it should have been.  I recall last year, my times were way off, but as the cool temps. came in Sept. and Oct., I ROLLED!  By nature, I am a very poor runner in the heat.  Give me temps in the 40's any day!

I kinda got away from doing this for a bit.  I do keep a really detailed log in an EXCEL spreadsheet with comments, etc.  I have always enjoyed, for some strange reason, reading the running logs of others.  I will update my previous dates as time permits.  My fitness is improving and on July 3rd, I didn't go sub 19:00, but I ran tough in horrid conditions (88F w/70% humidity).  I ended up running 19:10, but without any true VO2 Max workouts.

I am still continuing to do these Tinman CV workouts and am increasing the volume.  Today was 5x1200m @ 6:26 pace w/2:00 rec.  I lengthened the rec. due to it being 90F and sunny.

I "officially" begin my St. Jude Marathon training on July 30th, but along the way, I have set several races that I really want to run fast in.  I have my sights set on an 8k and two 1/2 marathons.  Usually, June and July are lower mileage months for me, but this year, they were me increasing my mileage to regain fitness.  I am happy with my progess thus far.  I am also doing more back to back med. distance runs, instead of runnning 10 miles one day and then 4 miles the next.  I now catch myself doing 8 miles on Mon., 9 miles on Tue, etc.  I am getting stronger.

The baby comes via c-section on August 8th, if not sooner.  Marathon training will be fun.  I also found out that I am eligible and will be taking a full 30 days off after the birth (Family Med. Leave).  I should be able to really increase the mileage then!

Same old thing - just getting in the miles in this dreadful heat.  I ran ~HMP for a few miles, just to loosen things up and then met a friend of mine for another 4 miles.  It sure is nice to have someone to run with every once in a while, even if the pace is a bit slower.

Ran 3 miles, met my friend for 5 more and then ran home by myself.  Sure, it was hot and I should have gone farther, but my strength is growing.  Heat, humidity, and longer runs go hand in hand.  When will fall be here.

There is somewhat of a trend here.  I am trying to keep my daily mileage between 7-8 miles per day.  My body feels the best it has in a long time.  I will slowly increase my mileage and increasing the overvall volume of my CV workouts.  This week also begins hill repeats and more frequent racing, substituting for hill repeats.  Wasn't it Frank Shorter who said that running hills was speedwork in disguise or something along those lines?

Everything feels like it is coming together.  After time off due to an injury, I finally feel fit again.  The workout that I did tonight supports the feeling.  I have been staying away from the typical VO2 Max stuff and just concentrating on CV workouts, but increasing the volume.  I am now up to 4x1600m @ ~6:20 pace w/2:00 rec.  Over the summer, I will slowly increase the volume to 8-10k, leading up to my marathon.  I could have easily rattled off a few more miles, but resisted.  I ran at 7:00 p.m. when the temp. was ONLY 85F.  Man, did the cooler weather feel good.
